Key "Bumping" seems like magic: insert a specially crafted key into a lock, turn the key and hit it with a hammer - and the lock opens.

While the principles of key bumping are proven, in-the-field success depends heavily on the orchestration of several elements to be effective. Crucial to performance is the percussive tool: not enough force, the key displaces the key pins, rather than communicating the inertia through to the driver pins. Too much force can damage the lock and key, and also transmit lateral shock, which hinders pin movement.

Likewise, having the right bump keys makes all the difference. Lock profiles are different in different countries; too many keys becomes time-consuming, too-few keys is frustrating.
